Work with wood or woodworking is a great hobby!
Welcome to my work with wood site!
Hi, and welcome! To work with wood is one of the greatest hobbies in the world. There is nothing like taking some blocks of lumber and making something beautiful and even useful out of them! I want this site to be a place where we can find useful articles to read and great tips and insights to help us along the wood working road. I have set up a blog so that we can share our stories about wood working and share our knowledge with each other. Blogs are a place to ask questions, tell others of our successes, failures and tall tales.
In Case you are wondering I am holding a cut out of a Polar Bear. I am standing in the most northerly wood shop in the world. This place is only 500 miles from the North Pole! There is a sign over my head, 'Santa's Work Shop', I think it qualifies. The location is CFS Alert on the northern tip of Elsemere Island in Canada.
Have fun building your own out door wood furniture, indoor wood furniture, dog house, shed, or any kind of wood project and share it here. Email pictures and I will post them here, along with any commentary you would care to send along by way of explanation. Get building, keep building and have fun.

No more wood working as I am off with the Navy for awhile.
I have been posted away from home for the next few months with the Navy. My woodworking plans will have to be put on hold. To work with wood is great fun but I shall be spending my time on a base away from my tools and equipment. I will not be able to keep this page as updated as I would like. At any rate have fun; build with wood!

If you build a great shed outside it will add value to your property...or not.
I have been considering replacing my shed, yes the ugly one that was built on the fly. So I decided to take my camera on a tour of the local area and take some pictures of sheds. Since most places around here are considered somewhat upscale I thought I would find lots of ideas and some very attractive sheds. Wrong! I saw million dollar homes with shanty town sheds. This was a great surprise to me. Since I only took pictures from the road what you see is what is visible form the road. Have a look at these shanty sheds. I am more determined than ever to replace mine and do it right!

This is a really neat simple project to astound your friends! The pot on the stove is boiling water. The water will soften the wood and makes the whole thing possible.

How Not To Build A Shed!
Shed plans? Why?
It was about time to build a shed. There were bicycles, wheelbarrows, garden tools and all kinds of outdoor stuff cluttering up the yard. It should have been easy to build a shed since I had completely finished our basement by myself. It would have been, had I taken the time to plan what I needed and design the sheds look and layout. Instead, I started buying lumber, nails and whatever else I thought I might need. This is called, make it up as you go shopping, and can be very expensive. I dragged it all home and slapped it together, planning it as I nailed it using my phantom blueprints. Needless to say I wasted my money, my time and was not popular with my family, who had to live with, as you can see from the photo, this ugly and not very useful structure.
I learned that to build a shed I must begin simply, with at least these 4 steps:
1. What is purpose of the shed what is it going to do for you. Is it only for garden tools or will you be storing bikes and other items in it? The answers will help determine not only the size and shape of your shed but also what size of door you build.
2. Knowing the purpose of your shed, choose a style and look that fits. Will it add to the landscape of the yard or not? Sheds can have many styles, find a shed blueprint or make a design that fits for you. You will be looking at it for a long time! (I know the one in the picture is about 8 years old, and yes it is coming down, soon)
3. Watch the legal angle, you must also remember to make sure that your new shed conforms to the local bylaws or you may face some trouble, especially when you go to sell your house.
4. Finally, and only after the above three steps, buy the required materials that you know you need from your design plans and go for it!
I knew how to use woodworking tools - hammer and nails, tape measure and saw. I failed to plan ahead and write my shed plan on paper. As a result I got what I planned for, a shed that was really ineffective and not pleasant to look at.
As a bonus I have found that using good woodworking plans really makes the project much more fun to build. Follow these simple steps and I believe that you will have more fun and achieve a shed you can be proud of and maybe even a tidy yard. Friends, please learn from my mistakes!
I love to build with wood and over the years I have found many advantages to using written plans, designs and drawings. This is true whether for shed building or any type of woodworking project. Being a good carpenter starts with having good plans. Build a better shed by planning ahead. May you always achieve your goal of creating a great project the first time. http://www.shedbuildingmadeeasy.info
